Swim Training

Winter Pool Training

Typical periodised programme

Each year the club runs off-season pool training which starts in the autumn and continues, on consecutive Fridays, through to our return to open water in June.

The sessions are progressive and are aimed at improving speed, endurance and technique.  As such, the sessions are aimed at people who already have basic frontcrawl skills and are comfortable swimming at least 100m. The programme is fully periodised and designed to build from the end of race Season 'Transition' phase through Preparation, Base, Build and Peak to Race fitness in early June.  Sessions will include technique, fitness and skills sessions such as drafting, turning and open water skills.

The programme has been designed and modified by our coaching team and all the sessions are coached by the club's British Triathlon qualified coaches.

Swim fins and hand paddles are used during these sessions.  Some are available at the pool, but if you have your own, please bring them with you.  More advice on swim 'toys' can be found on the Training aids page, which gives a breakdown of various aids and some simple drills.

The sessions are Friday 8pm to 9pm at the Helston Sports Centre, and cost £5 for members.  If you are thinking of joining the club, you are welcome to attend a session or two as a guest to get a taster of what we offer. Please email us (see contact page) if you'd like to come along as a guest. We book the entire pool to give us the ability to cater for varying pace and ability.

Summer Open water Training

Gyllyngvase beach, one of our OW swim spots.

In the summer the club leaves the pool and transfer the Friday night swim to a variety of the local beaches.  These sessions are designed to cater for those wanting to move into open water races, build open water confidence or just carry on the progress they have made over the winter.  For safety reasons, minimum ability levels will apply and these will be posted closer to the time.

The exact format for the Open Water sessions will be announced closer to the time via the club's Facebook page.
